Rocky Run YMCA Youth/Teen Programs

The Rocky Run YMCA offers programs for everyone, and a number have a special focus on early childhood development and are designed for integrated therapy purposes.

Sports Leagues - Ages 3 - 12

Our sports leagues are a great introduction to sports instruction, sportsmanship, teamwork, fair play and of course, FUN!

SPORTS INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

In the event of inclement weather, we will make a decision about our programs approximately ONE HOUR prior to the start of the first game.  If you have any questions about a potentially cancelled class, please check our website or call the Welcome Center.

Volunteer coaches are needed for our sports programs.  Please contact our Sports Director for more information on being a volunteer coach!

Dance

 

Intro to Dance - Ages 3 - 4

Children learn the basic elements of dance and FUN, while developing a foundation for all forms of dance.  Ballet slippers or socks are required.

 

Ballet & Tap - Ages 5 - 6

Develop grace, poise and self-confidence while increasing flexibility and coordination.  Learn the fundamental steps of ballet and tap.  Students should be dressed in comfortable clothes.  Tap shoes and ballet slippers not required, but helpful.

 

Hip Hop - Ages 7 - 18

Learn fun, high intensity free style street dancing while burning fat and learning new moves.  Take rountines to your next dance, talent show or party!

 

 

 

Youth Weightlifting - Ages 8 - 12

 

Improve strength, confidence, and coordination in this hands-on class.  Learn proper lifting techniques, basic exercise physiology, and various systems for developing optimal strength and performance.  Proper nutrition is also covered.  Build strength and make friends at the same time.


Teen Weightlifting - Ages 13 - 17

Improve strength, confidence, and coordination in this program where you learn by doing.  Learn proper lifting techniques, basic exercise physiology, and various systems for developing optimal strength and performance.  Proper nutrition is also covered.  Get stronger and make new friends!


Mommy & Me Yoga - Ages 12 - 23 Months

Stretch, breathe, and relax with your child while interacting with other parents.  Improves posture, flexibility, strength, and endurance while improving overall well-being.


Youth Yoga - Ages 6 - 8

Kids today are under a lot of stress.  Just like their parents, today’s youth are turning towards Yoga for relaxation.  This class helps develop better body awareness, self-control, flexibility and coordination.  Kids carry these skills beyond this class and into their daily routines.
 

 

Tumblers - Ages 3 - 6 

Children are guided through age appropriate tumbling skills while improving coordination and balance.  This class uses basic gymnastics equipment and parents do not participate.

 

 

Basic Karate - Ages 5 - 7 

Children develop flexibility, strength, cardiovascular fitness, learn practical self - defense and build self - confidence.  Mental conditioning is an integral part of the instruction.  This is not a progressive program.

 

 

Shotokan Karate - Ages 7+

Children develop flexibility, strength, cardiovascular fitness, learn practical self - defense and build self - confidence.  Mental conditioning is an integral part of the instruction.  This is a progressive program taught by a certified instructor.

 

Art Programs

Creative Kids - Ages 3 - 6

Join in the creative world of painting!  Young children will explore different types of painting while they create a masterpiece each week.  Other areas of art will also be introduced during the session.

 

Globe Trotters - Ages 4 - 6

You're never too young to start thinking globally.  Each week, we explore a new country through crafts, games, music, stories and poems.  A perfect introduction to our great big world!

 

Music Makers - Ages 3 - 4

Introduce your child to the wonderful world of music through simple songs, tapping, clapping, wiggles and tickles.  Children try out different musical instruments and make their own individual sounds.

 

Munchkin Cooking - Ages 4 - 6

Join us as we explore the world of cooking!  Participants decorate their own aprons, create a cookbook, listen to related stories, and, of course, make some yummy treats.

 

 Birthday Parties at the Y

Sports Parties - Ages 3 - 8

Parties are 2 hours and include time in the gymnasium and time in the party room.  Each Sports Party is a unique experience.  Soccer, Basketball, Flag Football, Floor Hockey, New Games, Relay Races are all possible sport themes!  Parties are available on Saturdays from 3:30-5:30p and Sundays either 1-3p or 4-6p.  Please contact the sports office for further questions and/or scheduling.

 

Splash Parties - Ages 7 - 15

Parties include 1 hour in the pool and 1 hour in the party room.  Parties are available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.  Please contact the aquatics office for further questions and/or scheduling.

 

 

Teen Programs

 

Youth & Teen Leadership Clubs
Jr. Leaders Club (Ages 10 - 12) and Leaders Club (Ages 13 - 18):  

These clubs provides a place for you to become a better person and leader while learning more about yourself and the world around you. This club is co-ed and run by the club members with the guidance of adult advisors. Grounded on the building blocks of leadership development, we have lots of fun, perform volunteer work that helps others, have meaningful talks about what’s important in life and learn to listen with an open mind to others’ opinions. We also plan and attend enjoyable trips. Leaders Club also participates in Teen Rallies throughout the Northeast. For more information, contact Mark Kalloz for more information

Youth & Government
This is a great program for teens who are interested in how the government and politics affect their lives and the community.  The Teens will be able to attend a conference where they can participate in presenting a bill to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in Harrisburg, PA.

Y Achievers - Grades 9 - 12

The Rocky Run YMCA Achievers program is a leadership program designed for minority youth in grades 9 - 12 in our community.  Teens meet on selected Saturday mornings and are transported to Drexel University.  At Drexel Achievers have opportunities to choose a career cluster and learn about some of the aspects of that career.  Careers include: Law, Engineering, Health & Medicine, Arts and Business.  This program is FREE to all minority youth who are members of the Rocky Run YMCA.  Contact the welcome center for more information.

 

Teen Wellness Orientations - Ages 10 - 17 (10 - 12 year olds are mandatory)

All teens ages 10 - 17 are premitted to use the wellness center after they have completed an orientation to the proper use or equipment, as well as guidelines for achieving goals with a YMCA wellness coach.  Kids ages 10 - 12 MUST complete this orientation, it is highly recommended for kids ages 13 and above.  Appointments can be scheduled at the welcome center.

Earth Service Corps

This is a service-learning program for teens ready to make a difference in their communities. Grounded on the building blocks of leadership development, environmental education and action, and cross-cultural awareness, this proven program works in diverse communities and allows teens to use their talents, develop new skills and learn more about themselves and their surroundings. Most importantly, young people in Earth Service Corps are recognized as valuable resources who work hand-in-hand with others to solve important issues.
